Table of Contents
There are three methods to download and install plugins in WordPress:
- Using the search option in WordPress to download and install the plugin
- By uploading Plugin zip file which the user will download from the internet/another source
- Using FTP server to directly put the plugin files on the WordPress server.
Using the search option in WordPress to download and install the plugin
This method is very easy and preferable to use. In this method, all you have to do is to login into your WordPress Dashboard > Plugins > Add New > Search for the plugin you need. You can also select from other categories to download the plugin.
You can also select from Featured, Popular, Recommended or Favourites where you can find tons of plugin downloaded by users and ranked by them.
By uploading a Plugin zip file
In this method, If you already have the plugin.zip file which you downloaded from the internet and want to install it on your WordPress site, all you have to do is to upload that file on the WordPress dashboard. To upload the file, go to WordPress Dashboard > Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin > Select the .zip file and click on Install Now button to install the plugin.
Using FTP server to directly put the plugin files on the WordPress server
This method is very similar to the second method which we just saw. The difference is just that this is a long road to do the same thing. In the second method, you were uploading the .zip file on the WordPress plugin page to install it. In this method, you are going to put that zip file on the WordPress server on yourself without installing it. For this method, you need to access the Cpanel > File manager > Your website folder > paste the extracted files from the zip file into your website folder. Then log in to your WordPress dashboard > Plugins and select the plugin you just pasted on the FTP server and click Activate to activate the plugin.
Note: You can not install plugins to your WordPress.com website as it restricted version and to use the plugins you need to buy a subscription or upgrade your plan to Premium. The above methods are for self-hosted WordPress sites which uses WordPress.org. To know more, check out our WordPress.com VS WordPress.org article.
