  • The first virtual reality headset was created in 1968 by American computer scientist Ivan Sutherland and his student, Bob Sproull.
  • Jaron Lanier is the Founding father of Virtual Reality. He is an American computer philosophy writer, computer scientist, and visual artist.

“The computer-generated simulation of a three-dimensional image or environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real or physical way by a person using special electronic equipment, such as a helmet with a screen onside gloves fitted with sensors.”

  • Virtual Reality hardware is used in with software to show the user the environment that is not physically existed but it looked so real. Some VR hardware provides glasses, gloves and other accessories to simulate other senses like touch.
  • Virtual reality helps the user to interact with the environment or experience different type of world or dimensions.
  • We can use virtual reality for daily life. Ex., – Training and learning, healthcare, recruitment, tourism, meetings and everyday communication.
  • There are three main types of virtual reality, used to experience the world around us-
    • Non-immersive
    • Semi Immersive
    • Fully immersive

Fully Immersive Simulations:

  • In this kind of VR, Users can experience the most realistic environment or dimensions.
  • This type of VR is mostly used for gaming and other entertainment purposes.
  • For a fully immersive experience, the user can use head-mounted Displays, headphones, gloves, treadmill or some kind of suspension apparatus.
  • In this VR, user can feel like it completely real or they there.

The VR headsets provide high-resolution content with a wide field of view. Whether you’re flying or fighting the bad guys, you’ll feel like you’re there.

Semi Immersive Simulations

  • This type of VR is mainly used for educational and training purpose and the experience is made possible with graphical computing and large projector systems.

In this example, the instruments in front of the pilot are real and the windows are screens displaying virtual content.

  • It’s important to keep in mind that semi-immersive VR simulations still give users the perception of being an indifferent reality.
  • This type of VR is not always possible to experience wherever. Instead, physical environments are created to supplement virtual reality.

Non-immersive Simulations:

  • Non-immersive simulation is an actual type of virtual reality. It can be used for daily life.
  • Non-immersive simulations are used for video games.
  • VR allows for interacting with the environment through mouse or joystick.
  • The average video game is technically considered a non-immersive virtual reality experience. Think about it, you’re sitting in a physical space, interacting with a virtual one.

These types of experiences have become more advanced in recent years with video games like Wii Sports, where the system actually detects your motion and translates it on screen.
